Overview
PROJECT BACKGROUND
One survey of 900 dog owners found that nearly half responded that choosing the right food for their dog was the most difficult part of pet ownership. 90% of dog owners do not know what proper nutrition is for their dogs.
Bark Organics, an Organic dog food brand, wanted an app designed to track the nutrition of their pet dogs, and in effect, meet business goals.
SOLUTION
The nutrition tracking feature of the new Bark Organics App provides personalized recommendations to dog owners, leading to in-app product purchases, and subsequently increasing sales.
There isn’t a product on the market currently that provides nutrition recommendations for pets according to their personal needs.
PROCESS

Design Approach
Two user groups identified were first-time dog owners and experienced dog owners.
These two user groups confirmed initial assumptions about the direction of the product and established what gaps were to be filled in comparison to other products in the market.
USER RESEARCH
USER PERSONAS
USER PAIN POINTS
COMPETITIVE AUDIT
The key competitors are other organic dog-food brands that provide nutritional information, as well as a platform to purchase necessary items. Since such a product was not available in the market, a few companies as outlined below are identified as competitors - Nutripup, Pawsm, UnoDogs & Chewy
Understanding the strengths, weaknesses, gaps and opportunities of the competitor products gave insight into product features that could be included in the MVP.
Checked features are selected for the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) while others are selected to be explored in the post-MVP stage.
WIREFRAMES
The basis of the screen designs are the feedback and findings from the user research, addressing user pain points.

TAKEAWAYS
Product
As a working prototype, Bark Organics focuses on creating a clear mental model for the user and uses a simple structure or information architecture to make the experience intuitive, informative, and enjoyable.
Impact
The app fills gaps in the market by providing real-time recommendations according to users’ pet needs/health. It consolidates the process of nutrition tracking and purchases into a single flow, making it a lot easier for dog owners. The newly added ‘nutrition-tracking to product recommendation to purchase’ flow feature also helps to better the business goals.
What I learned
While designing the BarkOrganics app, I learned that the first ideas are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and feedback influenced each stage of the design, making every iteration a better experience for the user.
